Old Projects for New

Work has been going ahead for the shooting script of the Fairground Booth and the other two documentary films associated with the project. Here in Moscow its been an interesting few days creatively.  After attending an exhibition of Japanese micropop art in Moscow it made me look at a film project on which I was engaged  before the completion of “Stanislavsky and the Russian Theatre”  I set the project aside despite the first part of the two film project being completed and much of the 2nd film also in an advanced state of post production. The two films were about Japanese art and culture and somehow they didn’t feel complete so I decided to put them on one side. As it turns out this incompleteness may turn out to be a positive aspect and to the advantage of the project as a whole. The two films were the outcome of  two 3 month journeys to Japan especially for filming at locations all over Japan. The project is in a process of re evaluation and to some extent reinterpretation and redefining. More later on this subject as I work out which is the best media for introducing this project. Working on the shooting script of the Fairground Booth once again after a brief lull. On Friday evening we attended an exhibition of Japanese contemporary art (micropop) at the State Centre of Contemporary Art in Moscow as part of the 4th Moscow Bienalle  which is taking place here. … Continue reading

“Process” in Film making in relation to “The Fairground Booth”

Moscow Metro

Making my way around Moscow to meetings and checking out various possibilities, cameras etc, for the films. The last few days have been a question of working out a tone and style for the film adaptation of The Fairground Booth. The accompanying documentaries in the project “Vakhtangov and the Russian Theatre” and “Carnival in Russian Theatre” are relatively straight forward with the stress on relatively. However a film adaptation of Blok’s play is distinctly problematic. Firstly, there are many stereotypical takes on the main characters -Pierrot, Columbine and Harlequin which I want to avoid. I aim to find a particular tone and style for the production and this will effect the overall design for the play, costumes set and general look. This will take time so the best thing is to continue with the shooting script and background research to all the three films. This will provide the necessary depth once some of the other questions begin to get solved. Its a similar situation I faced in the film “Alexander Rodchenko and the Russian Avant-garde”. It was the first film I made in Moscow and required scenes showing Rodchenko at work at his desk and other scenes of Rodchenko. For an extended account about the making of this film click here.

In this film I needed to solve two basic problems. The style in which I would shoot and casting the role of Rodchenko. It took a long time and followed a specific process of finding the right person for the role. A similar process is emerging once again whereby there are a lot of questions and and you have to wait for some of the answers.

The Fairground Booth update – Work on Shooting script begins

Moscow 18/09/2011

Despite a bout of Moscow flu work continues on the three film project about Russian theatre – a film about Vahktangov, a film about Carnival and Russian theatre and a film adaptation of Blok’s “Fairground Booth” a play he wrote and was presented in Moscow in 1907 with Meyerhold as director. The three films will make up a series with the two films already completed – “Meyerhold Theatre and the Russian Avant-garde” and “Stanislavsky and Russian Theatre”. This weekend has seen progress on all three of the new films in terms of research and background material and a start on the shooting script for “The Fairground Booth”. Enormous amount of questions to solve on all fronts but the only way is to work through them step by step. Much of the work this weekend was on deepening the understanding  connections between the three films and exploring new thematic possibilities and lines of development.

Up to now a way of approaching the shooting script seemed illusive, mainly because it is a theatrical play and needs adapting to a film. However this process is gradually becoming clearer and a way forward seems open to resolve the questions posed by this process.

Further Progress on the “Fairground Booth”

Another couple of days of writing and preparing the projects of Vahktangov and Carnival in Russian Theatre. Last night had a meeting  in the centre of Moscow about the main location for filming but as yet there is nothing concrete decided. Firmly back into the Moscow rhythm  after a few weeks in the Russian countryside. Slowly evaluating this period – a productive time of writing and reflection(and chopping firewood). Starting to flesh out a shooting script for “The Fairground Booth” using the Celtx screen writing programme. I am not sure how this will work as the screenplay is an adaptation of a theatrical play but will persevere. Today dosing myself up with lemon tea to try and ward off the Moscow flu.  Autumn weather taking a hold a cold wind whipping around the side streets of Moscow a sure sign that winter is not far away. Awaiting the possibility of Babi Leta (Indian Summer) which often starts around this time but as yet no evidence that it is on its way.

The Fairground Booth – Update on a new film project in development by Copernicus Films

Alexander Blok

Alexander Blok

Today has been spent considering what steps to take in assembling a crew and a team to make an adaptation of the film The Fairground Booth by Alexander Blok.  The project requires a team of people who will be able to understand the overall vision – that would include techicians actors and all personnel. That might sound quite an obvious thing to say but this is such a unique project and in such a unique place – Moscow –  that it will require subtle understanding of the dimensions and more importantly the paramaters of Russian theatre. That means understanding some of the historical background to Russian Theatre as well as having an open mind to experimentation and innovation.

The other two parts of the project, “Carnival and Russian Theatre” and “Vahktangov“are going ahead with both the scripts are coming together piece by piece. They are not quite at the stage where we are ready to start filming but at the moment there are no particular deadlines, just a desire to keep developing the work and moving the scripts forward ready for shooting.

Update: Autumn Grandeur in Moscow

A brief update. Will follow up on location for Fairground Booth film maybe Tomorrow. Other work continuing on scripts for “Carnival in Russian Theatre” and Vahktangov documentary. Worked most of the weekend updating blogs and internet sites social media etc Plus some experiments in filming with green screens and lighting. Reading Gogol as background material.

Things gradually taking shape on this film project although I’m still no nearer to getting back into the Moscow rhythm since returning from the dacha outside Moscow. All across Moscow rolling dark clouds pass by my apartment window high up on the seventh floor perched on a hill a few minutes walk away from the Moskva River, in a vast panorama of Moscow and it distant environs. Beautiful in its seemingly threatening grandeur. Moscow has expanded over the centuries in concentric rings and it seems like our apartment sits at one of the epicentres of the first ring. The scene outside is a sure sign autumn is here.

Moscow Rhythm

Anton Chekhov

Overall a scrappy day work wise, still trying to get back into the Moscow rhythm and pace which is very different from the countryside where we have been Chekhov Country as I call it. The weather doesn’t help, dull and rainy. Phone calls and editing plus preparation of the film Kandinsky and the Russian House for DynamoPlayer site after  enquires for a downloaded version of the film. Thinking through the location possibilities for  ”The Fairground Booth” plus exploring which DSLR camera to purchase – very difficult choice.

Updates from Moscow about progress of theatre film project from Copernicus Films

Most of the day engaged in updating social media networks  but the second half of the day preparing new short film for Chekhov Country series  for uploading on to YouTube. Its the kind of the final bit of our stay out in the Russian countryside where I spent a few weeks working on the scripts for the Vakhtangov and Carnival documentary  and Bloks Fairground Booth for the Russian theatre series. Yesterdays blog Blok,Vakhtangov, Carnival and Theatre, explains in some detail what the outlines of this project will be. Getting the carnival script lined up and gradually pulling the pieces together for this part of the project is the next step as well as checking out the location for The Fairground Booth.
